This commission presented a few problems. The only requirement was the use of the three hall colours, red, black and silver. In all my recent work I had used colours which were tonally close, what was I to do with black and silver? I eventually created a composition with a red dominated left, a silver right, held together with a black centre.
This opened new possibilities for me as I became aware of the dramatic impact of darker tones and metallic paint. There followed a series of large works in which the moire pattern, metallic paint, colour and tone fused together. The “Pavane” series.
